The licensing of .nu is one of many
stories about commercially marketed domain names. Similarly,
the combination of letters in Moldova's code, .md was
expected to have a definite appeal to doctors in the
United States.
Having drafted the original agreement
between the Moldovan administrator and his American
company, Florida-based attorney Dana M. Gallup was one
of the earliest entrants into the domain name game.
The Moldovan administrator granted him and his business
partner the rights to license .md domains with the hopes
of raising revenue and lifting the nation of Moldova
from its struggling economy.
His experiences reflect not only the
economic and technological struggles posed by the marketing
of domain names but also the intensely political power
struggles that occur as a result.
