In India, a nation of more than one billion people and
a strong technology industry, it may come as a surprise
to learn that there are less than 6,000 Internet websites
ending with the Indian country code .in. Yet that is
the case.
Instead of concentrating sites within
their country code top-level domain name space, as Chileans,
for example, have done, Indian webmasters have largely
abandoned their national code in favor of generic domain
endings like .com.
Tushar A. Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi,
argues that in doing so the Indian people have also
abandoned their national pride. He shows this neglect
through the social and bureaucratic hurdles he has faced
in his attempts to build an Indian national identity
on the Internet.
Since the publication of Addressing the World, the policies of .in have changed and there is now increased registration.
See, for example, How India's .in Domain Rpuses from its Slumber by Ram Mohan and the .in Registry.
