For almost twenty years, the nation of Chile was governed
by military rule. While the dictatorship brutally silenced
political opponents, it also instituted liberal economic
policies. As a result, Chile was not closed off from
the global technological advances occurring in the 1970s
and 1980s.
In 1987, on behalf of the University
of Chile, Patricio Poblete and his colleagues were delegated
the authority to administer .cl, the country code top-level
domain for Chile. Crediting the early start, responsive
rule–making, and a sense of national identity,
Poblete has seen the .cl name space become the most
popular domain name ending for the Chilean people.
