When country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) were developed,
few could foresee the Internet that was marked by vast commercialization
and quick profits. Indeed, the enormous success of .com may
have helped to curb both the demand and the practical use
for .us.
Jenny Sinclair, a reporter for Melbourne’s The Age
and the Sydney Morning Herald, explains how as awareness of
domain names grew, so too did the prospects for their commercial
use and possible exploitation. As a result, many ccTLDs, including
Australia’s .au, and their computer savvy caretakers
were thrust into a world they neither anticipated nor welcomed.
